Bricks, blocks, or stone - single or double skin - with mortar, coping, piers, DPC, and foundation concrete across multiple wall sections.

Single skin: 1 unit thick. Double: two leaves with 50-100 mm cavity.
60 units per m² (for stretcher bond, single skin) - adjust unit size above if using a different manufacturer.
5% for simple runs, 10% for standard, 15%+ for complex cuts/piers.
One coping unit per 300-450 mm of wall length.
Polythene DPC roll, 2 courses above ground. Calculated in linear metres.
Typically 3× wall width. Min 300 mm for single skin.
Min 200 mm for low garden walls; 300 mm where frost risk or soft ground.
Structural piers - typically every 1.8-3 m on single-skin walls over 600 mm high.

Wall Type Guide

  • Standard brick: Classic 215×65×102.5 mm. Most common for garden walls. Stretcher bond for single skin.
  • Concrete block: 440×215×100 mm dense or lightweight. Faster to lay, often rendered.
  • Natural stone: Variable sizes. Allow 15-20% waste for cutting. Irregular coursing.
  • Sleeper wall: Railway sleepers laid horizontally. 250×125 mm typical. Used for raised beds and retaining.
  • Reconstituted stone: Uniform block, stone appearance. Easier to lay than natural.

Walls over 1.8 m may require planning permission. Always check with your local authority.

Mortar & Pointing

  • 1:4 mix: High strength for foundations, copings, and engineering brick
  • 1:5 mix: Standard garden wall mortar - good strength, slightly flexible
  • 1:6 mix: Weaker, more breathable - suited to softer handmade brick and stone
  • Add plasticiser or use masonry cement for improved workability
  • Keep mortar joints consistent - 10 mm is standard for brick, 12-15 mm for stone
  • Protect fresh mortar from frost for 48 hours minimum
