Roof Slopes

Tile Types

  • Concrete interlocking - The most common type in the UK. Large single-lap tiles, approx 10 per m². Lightweight and low cost.
  • Concrete plain - Smaller double-lapped tiles, approx 60 per m². Suitable for pitches from 35°.
  • Clay plain - Traditional double-lapped clay tile. 60-65 per m². More expensive than concrete but longer-lasting.
  • Clay pantile - S-profile single-lap tile, approx 14 per m². Common in eastern England and coastal areas.
  • Clay Roman - Half-round roll profile. Approx 11 per m². Popular in Mediterranean-style architecture.
  • Fibre cement slate-effect - Modern alternative to natural slate. Approx 22 per m². Lightweight and uniform.

Measuring Tips

  • Eaves length - Measure horizontally along the bottom edge of each slope (the guttering line)
  • Rafter length - Measure along the slope itself from eaves to ridge - not the horizontal span
  • Ridge length - Measure the ridge board from end to end
  • Hip length - Measure along each hip rafter (the diagonal corners of a hipped roof) and add them together
  • For a simple gable roof: two slopes of equal size, no hips
  • For a hipped roof: four slopes, measure all four hip rafters and add together

Batten Gauge

Batten gauge (spacing) is determined by the tile manufacturer and depends on roof pitch. Typical values:

  • Concrete interlocking: 300-345mm
  • Clay plain / concrete plain: 90-115mm
  • Pantile: 320-343mm
  • Fibre cement slate: 180-225mm

Always check the product data sheet - the wrong gauge will void the warranty and may cause leaks.
