Why Accurate Wall Calculations Matter

Over-ordering bricks, blocks, or plasterboard is one of the most common and costly mistakes on any building project. A small error in your calculations can mean unnecessary skip hires, wasted materials, and budget overruns before work has even begun.

Our wall and structural calculators are built around real-world UK building practice. They account for standard brick and block sizes, mortar joint widths, standard sheet sizes, typical waste factors, and common wall configurations - so your quantities are accurate from the start.

Whether you are a professional builder pricing a job, a self-builder planning a new home, or a renovator tackling a single room, these tools give you the material quantities you need in seconds.

Key Factors in Wall Construction

  • Brick and block sizes varyStandard UK brick is 215x102.5x65mm with a 10mm mortar joint. Our calculators use these dimensions by default but allow custom sizes.
  • Mortar joints matterA typical 10mm bed and perpend joint adds approximately 20% to your mortar requirement. Always include this in your estimates.
  • Waste allowance is essentialCutting, breakage, and wastage typically add 5-15% to material quantities depending on the complexity of the job.
  • Cavity walls need two skinsDon't forget to calculate the inner and outer leaf separately if you are building a cavity wall construction.
  • Plasterboard coverageStandard boards are 2400x1200mm. Always factor in noggins, stud spacing, and openings when estimating sheet quantities.

Select a calculator below to get instant material quantities for your project.

Brick Calculator

Calculate exactly how many bricks you need for any wall, pier, or project. Enter your wall dimensions, select your bond pattern, choose a mortar joint width, and add a waste allowance. Supports standard UK brick sizes, imperial sizes, and custom dimensions. Includes mortar bag estimates and full job costing.

Use Calculator

Concrete Block Calculator

Estimate concrete block quantities for foundation walls, partition walls, and external leaf construction. Covers standard 440x215mm blocks, dense and lightweight aggregate blocks, and custom sizes. Calculates blocks per course, total courses, mortar requirements, and optional reinforcement.

Use Calculator

Plasterboard & Drywall Calculator

Calculate the number of plasterboard sheets required for walls, ceilings, and stud partitions. Select from standard UK board sizes (2400x1200mm, 2700x1200mm, etc.), choose your board thickness, deduct for openings such as doors and windows, and include a cutting waste allowance. Also estimates screws, joint tape, and jointing compound.

Use Calculator

Stud Wall Calculator

Estimate all the timber you need to frame a stud partition wall. Enter the wall dimensions and stud spacing (typically 400mm or 600mm centres), and the calculator works out head and sole plates, vertical studs, noggins, and the number of fixings required. Supports both 89mm and 140mm stud depths for standard and acoustic partitions.

Use Calculator

Render & Plaster Calculator

Calculate render and plaster quantities for internal and external wall surfaces. Choose your render type - sand and cement, lime, acrylic, or monocouche - specify the number of coats and application thickness, and the calculator estimates the total material required in kg or bags. Suitable for new build and renovation projects alike.

Use Calculator

Masonry Mortar Calculator

Estimate mortar quantities for brickwork, blockwork, and stone walling. Select your mortar mix ratio (1:3, 1:4, 1:5, or 1:6), enter the wall area or number of units, and specify the joint size. Returns cement and sand volumes in kg and tonnes, plus pre-mixed mortar bag quantities as an alternative. Ideal for both hand mixing and ready-mix planning.
