Laminate - HDF core with a photographic layer. Budget-friendly, good scratch resistance. Not suitable for wet areas. AC rating 3-5 for domestic to commercial use.
Engineered Wood - Real wood veneer over plywood core. More stable than solid wood, can be floated or glued. Suitable for underfloor heating.
LVT / Luxury Vinyl Plank - 100% waterproof, warm underfoot. Ideal for kitchens, bathrooms and hallways. Usually 4-8mm thick with a wear layer of 0.3-0.55mm.
Vinyl Plank / SPC - Stone polymer composite core. Rigid and extremely durable. Fully waterproof and suitable for commercial use.
Solid Hardwood - Traditional tongue and groove solid timber. Needs to acclimatise for 48-72 hours. Can be sanded and refinished multiple times.

Straight lay - 10% waste is standard for a simple rectangular room
Diagonal (45°) - Allow 15% - more cuts on every wall
Herringbone - Allow 15-20% - high cut count at each end
L-shaped room - Allow 10-12% - extra cuts around the notch
Multiple small rooms - Allow 10-15% - off-cuts rarely transfer between rooms

Always buy at least one extra pack and keep it for future repairs - matching a discontinued batch later is very difficult.

Most laminate and engineered wood is floated over an underlay. LVT and SPC are often self-underlaid - check the product spec.
