Why Accurate Interior Finishing Calculations Matter

Interior finishing materials - skirting boards, architrave, worktops, and staircase components - are often sold in fixed lengths and have significant cutting waste due to mitres, joints, and exact-length requirements. Under-ordering by a single length can mean an additional delivery charge and a delay in completing the room.

Our interior finishing calculators account for the specific constraints of each trade. Skirting board calculations include mitre allowances and door openings; worktop calculations work around kitchen layouts with joints and scribing; and the staircase calculator checks UK Building Regulations compliance for every dimension.

Whether you are a joiner fitting out multiple rooms, a builder completing a new build, or a homeowner upgrading a kitchen, these tools help you order accurately the first time.

Key Factors in Interior Finishing

  • Mitre cuts increase wasteSkirting boards and architrave at internal and external corners are cut at 45 degrees. These mitre cuts use more length per run than you might expect, particularly on longer sections with multiple corners.
  • Worktop joint positionsWorktop joints must be supported by a cabinet below and should not fall over a drawer or appliance opening. Planning joint positions before cutting avoids expensive mistakes with sheet materials.
  • Staircase complianceUK Building Regulations Part K require risers between 150mm and 220mm, goings between 220mm and 300mm, and the 2R+G formula to fall between 550mm and 700mm. Our calculator checks all these automatically.
  • Baluster spacing rulesBalusters on domestic staircases must be spaced so that a 100mm sphere cannot pass through any gap. This directly determines the number of balusters required per flight.
  • Allow for scribingWhere skirting or worktops meet uneven walls or floors, material is removed by scribing to fit the profile of the surface. Always add 10-15mm extra width to allow for this in your order.

Interior Finishing Calculators

Select a calculator below to get instant material quantities for your interior fit-out.

Skirting Board & Trim Calculator

Calculate the total linear metres of skirting board needed for any room or series of rooms. Enter room perimeter, number of doorways and their widths, and the standard board lengths you will be buying. The calculator returns total metres required, number of lengths to purchase, and accounts for corner joints and cutting waste. Supports all skirting profiles.

Use Calculator

Door Frame Calculator

Estimate door frame liner, door casing, and architrave quantities for any number of doorways. Enter door dimensions, specify single or double doors, and choose whether you need head and jamb liners or a full pre-machined door set. Returns total lengths of each component and the number of standard lengths required. Covers both metric and imperial door sizes.

Use Calculator

Kitchen Worktop Calculator

Calculate kitchen worktop lengths, joint positions, and total material needed for any kitchen layout. Enter the run lengths for each section of worktop, specify hob, sink, and return positions, and the calculator works out total linear metres, joint count, offcut dimensions, and whether standard worktop lengths will accommodate the layout without additional joints.

Use Calculator

Staircase Calculator

Calculate stair geometry, material quantities, and UK Building Regulations compliance for any staircase. Enter the total rise and going, choose the stair type (straight, quarter-turn, half-turn, or winder), and the calculator checks all Part K compliance requirements and returns riser count, tread board m2, riser board m2, stringer length, baluster count, handrail length, and newel post quantity.
