Rates vary significantly by substrate porosity and application method. Always check the product data sheet for the manufacturer's stated coverage.

Tanking slurry - apply in two brush coats at right angles to each other. Second coat while first is still green (not fully dry). Minimum 2-3 kg/m² total for effective waterproofing.
Bitumen / liquid membrane - multiple thin coats better than one thick coat. Allow full tack-dry between coats.
Decking oil - clean and dry deck first. First coat soaks in fast - a second coat while first is wet on new wood improves penetration.
Floor paint / epoxy - degrease thoroughly; etch with dilute acid if very smooth. Apply primer coat first on bare concrete.
Metal paint - remove all rust to bright metal before priming. Hammerite-style paints can go direct to rust on light surface rust only.
