The construction industry accounts for around 40% of the UK's total carbon emissions - and a growing share of that comes from the materials we use rather than the energy buildings consume. Embodied carbon - the CO₂ locked into bricks, concrete, steel, timber and insulation at the point of manufacture - is increasingly under regulatory and commercial scrutiny, yet most self-builders and renovators have no simple way to measure it.

Our free carbon estimator changes that. It reads the material quantities you have already calculated and saved in My Projects, maps them to ICE Database v3 carbon factors - the same reference used by architects and engineers for RIBA and RICS assessments - and produces a per-material CO₂ breakdown in seconds. You can also add a simple operational carbon estimate to see how your insulation choices and heating fuel affect lifetime emissions over 30 or 60 years.

Embodied Carbon

The CO₂ emitted to manufacture, transport and install your building materials - bricks, concrete, timber, insulation, roof tiles and more. This is a one-time upfront emission locked in before anyone sets foot in the building.

Operational Carbon

The CO₂ produced year after year through heating, hot water and appliances. Over a 60-year building life this typically dwarfs embodied carbon - which is why insulation level and fuel type matter so much.

Run your material calculators Use our building calculators to work out quantities - bricks, concrete, insulation, roof tiles, screed, timber and more. Each calculator captures the material quantities you will need.

Save results to a project Click Save to Project on any calculator result. Group your calculations under a single project - for example "Side Extension" or "New Build Plot 4". You can save as many items as you like.

Open My Projects and click Carbon Go to My Projects, find your project, and click the Carbon button. The estimator reads your saved quantities, maps them to ICE Database v3 carbon factors, and produces an embodied carbon breakdown automatically.

What is embodied carbon in construction? +

Embodied carbon is the CO₂ emitted to manufacture, transport and install building materials - from the quarrying of raw materials to delivery on site. Unlike operational carbon (from heating and energy use), embodied carbon is locked in at the point of construction and cannot be reduced once the building is built. It typically represents 20-40% of a new home's whole-life carbon footprint.

What is the difference between embodied and operational carbon? +

Embodied carbon is the one-time upfront CO₂ from making and installing your materials. Operational carbon is the ongoing CO₂ from heating, hot water and appliances over the building's life. Over 60 years, operational carbon typically accounts for 60-80% of a building's total lifecycle emissions - which is why insulation level, fuel type and heating system efficiency matter so much for overall impact.

What is the ICE Database and why does it matter? +

The Inventory of Carbon and Energy (ICE) v3, published by the University of Bath and Circular Ecology, is the UK's most widely used reference for embodied carbon factors. It provides kgCO₂e per unit figures for hundreds of construction materials and is the dataset referenced by RICS, RIBA and most planning authorities when requiring whole-life carbon assessments. Our estimator uses ICE v3 factors throughout.

Does the Future Homes Standard require embodied carbon reporting? +

The Future Homes Standard (due 2025) primarily targets operational carbon, requiring new homes to produce 75-80% less than current Part L regulations. Mandatory embodied carbon reporting is expected in subsequent updates. However, many local planning authorities - particularly in London and other major cities - are already requiring whole-life carbon assessments as a planning condition, and housing developers are increasingly reporting against RICS and RIBA frameworks voluntarily.

How accurate is this carbon estimate? +

This tool provides an indicative estimate, not a certified assessment. Carbon factors are generic averages from ICE v3 - actual embodied carbon varies by manufacturer, supply chain, and specification. The operational carbon estimate uses typical UK space heating benchmarks (CIBSE/Carbon Trust) and current grid carbon intensity. For RIBA Stage assessments, planning submissions, or RICS compliance, you should commission a certified whole-life carbon assessment from a qualified assessor.
