How much guttering do I need?
Measure the total length of each eaves run and add lengths for any internal or external angles, stop ends, outlets and unions. Standard half-round and square guttering comes in 2 m or 4 m lengths - divide your run length by the gutter length and round up. Add one outlet per run (maximum 12 m per outlet for standard 112 mm half-round gutter) and one downpipe per outlet. Under UK Building Regulations Approved Document H, guttering and downpipes must be sized to handle the rainfall intensity for your location - typically 75 mm/hour for most of the UK. For larger or high-exposure roofs, 150 mm gutters and 75-100 mm downpipes may be required. Our calculator covers all common gutter profiles and sizes with fittings counts and material quantities.

What size guttering do I need?
Most standard UK houses use 112 mm half-round or 114 mm square guttering - suitable for pitches up to 35° and runs up to 12 m per outlet. For larger roofs, steep pitches (over 45°) or high-rainfall areas: 150 mm guttering and 68-75 mm downpipes. Per Approved Document H: the system must handle 75 mm/hour rainfall intensity.
What fall is needed for guttering?
Minimum gradient of 1:600 (approximately 1.7 mm per metre). In practice many installers use 1:400 for reliable drainage and to allow for minor inaccuracies. For a 6 m run at 1:600, the outlet end is approximately 10 mm lower than the closed end.
What is the difference between half-round and square guttering?
Half-round: traditional curved profile, most common on older UK properties. Square: flat back and base, popular on modern properties. Ogee: decorative S-shaped front, used to match period-style properties. Both 112 mm profiles carry similar flow capacity - flow depends on cross-sectional area and outlet size, not just profile.
How often should guttering clips be fixed?
Maximum 600 mm centres for uPVC gutter brackets. Fix a bracket within 150 mm of each side of union pieces and expansion joints. In heavy snow loading areas, reduce to 450 mm centres. Use stainless steel or galvanised fixings. Brackets needed = (run length ÷ 0.6) + 1.
What Building Regulations apply to guttering and drainage?
Covered by Approved Document H. System must handle 75 mm/hour rainfall intensity for most of the UK. Rainwater must discharge to a surface water drain, soakaway or watercourse - not to a foul drain unless no other option exists and the local authority permits it. Gutter Profiles
Half-round - The most common profile in the UK. Good flow capacity. Available in 75 mm, 100 mm, 112 mm, and 125 mm.
Square / Rectangular - Higher flow capacity for the same width. Popular on modern builds. Common sizes: 100 mm and 115 mm.
Ogee (K-style) - Decorative profile suited to period and traditional buildings. Matches original cast iron profiles.
Material Guide
uPVC - By far the most common. Low cost, low maintenance, available in many colours. Bracket every 600 mm.
Cast iron - Traditional, very durable, heavy. Required on listed buildings and conservation areas. Bracket every 900 mm.
Aluminium - Lightweight, rust-free, available in seamless lengths. Good for large spans.
Copper - Premium choice. Self-finishing patina, very long lifespan. Used on high-end or heritage projects.
Measuring Tips
Measure along the fascia board, not the roof edge
Each change of direction (corner) needs an angle fitting, not a union
Gutters should fall 1:600 towards the outlet (approx 3 mm per metre)
Each downpipe needs an outlet in the gutter run above it
Add a stop end at each open end of a run (usually 2 per straight run)
Unions join two straight sections together - needed between every section except at corners and outlets
