Why Accurate Concrete Calculations Matter

Concrete and groundworks materials are ordered by volume or weight, and errors in calculation are expensive. Too little concrete on a pour means either stopping work mid-job while you order more - which causes cold joints and structural weakness - or ordering a full extra load when only a fraction is needed.

Our concrete and foundations calculators work from your actual dimensions, the required concrete mix specification, and realistic wastage factors. They give you volumes in m3 alongside equivalent bag quantities for smaller pours, so you can choose between site mixing, bagged concrete, or a readymix order with confidence.

Whether you are a groundworker pricing a new build foundation, a builder laying a concrete pad, or a homeowner installing a driveway, these tools save time and materials.

Key Factors in Concrete Calculations

  • Allow for compactionLoose aggregate and sub-base materials compact by 15-30% when rolled or tamped. Always order more than the finished volume suggests - our calculators include this factor.
  • Mix specification mattersThe right concrete mix for the job is critical. A GEN1 mix for mass fill is very different from an RC40 mix for a structural beam. Specify correctly before ordering readymix.
  • Rebar spacing is structuralRebar diameter, spacing, and cover depth are design requirements, not estimates. Always refer to a structural engineer's design for reinforced concrete elements.
  • Oversite preparationA concrete slab needs a compacted sub-base, typically 100mm of MOT Type 1, plus DPM and insulation before the concrete. Calculate these layers separately as they form a significant material quantity.
  • Readymix minimum loadsMost readymix suppliers have a minimum order of around 4m3. For smaller volumes, bagged concrete or on-site mixing with ballast and cement is often more economical.

Concrete & Foundations Calculators

Select a calculator below to get instant quantities for your groundworks or concrete project.

Concrete Volume Calculator

Calculate the volume of concrete required for slabs, foundations, columns, pads, and paths. Enter dimensions and choose a shape - rectangular, circular, or L-shaped. Returns concrete volume in m3, estimated weight in tonnes, equivalent 25kg bag quantities, and readymix order size. Includes a wastage allowance option.

Use Calculator

Gravel & Stone Calculator

Estimate the weight and volume of gravel, crushed limestone, MOT Type 1, or hardcore required for driveways, paths, drainage trenches, and sub-bases. Enter area and depth, select the material type, and get the volume in m3 and weight in kg or tonnes. Includes compaction factor for sub-base and fill applications.

Use Calculator

Rebar Calculator

Calculate the total length and weight of steel reinforcement bar needed for a reinforced concrete slab or foundation. Enter the slab dimensions, rebar spacing, bar diameter, and specify single or double layer reinforcement. Returns the number of bars per direction, total linear metres, weight in kg, and an estimate of tie wire required.

Use Calculator

Aggregate & Ballast Calculator

Estimate sharp sand, all-in ballast, or coarse aggregate quantities for site-mixed concrete, mortar, and bedding applications. Enter the volume required and mix ratio, and the calculator returns the quantities of each constituent material by volume and weight. Covers standard concrete mixes from GEN0 to RC35 and common mortar ratios.
