Slip Format Guide

  • Standard (215×65mm) - Matches the UK standard brick module. Most colours and textures available. Works with any standard brick slip system.
  • Large Format (440×65mm) - Spans two bricks in length. Faster to fix, more contemporary look. Less common in handmade / aged styles.
  • Metro / Bevelled (150×75mm) - Square-format slip with a bevelled edge for a defined shadow line. Popular for internal feature walls and kitchens.
  • Victorian (215×73mm) - Slightly taller than standard - matches pre-metric Victorian brickwork.
  • Continental (240×71mm) - Common European module. Used on imported brick slip systems and some contemporary renders.

Bond Patterns

  • Stretcher bond - Each course offset by half a slip length. The most natural-looking bond - matches real brickwork. Best for large surfaces.
  • Stack bond - All joints aligned vertically. Very contemporary / graphic look. Requires precise setting-out and movement joints at closer centres.
  • Flemish bond - Alternating long (stretcher) and short (header) slips per course. Traditional appearance - needs corner slips or special header pieces.

The slip count per m² is the same regardless of bond pattern - only the setting-out layout changes.

Adhesive & Pointing

  • Use a flexible, polymer-modified adhesive rated for external use - standard wall tile adhesive is not suitable outdoors
  • Apply with a notched trowel (6 mm notch) back-buttering each slip as well for full coverage
  • For EWI / render board substrates, prime first with an acrylic primer to reduce suction
  • Joint width affects pointing quantity significantly - increase the kg/m² figure for wider joints
  • Pointing mortar: use an alkali-resistant, frost-proof mix outdoors - standard sand:cement is not recommended for slips
  • Allow adhesive to cure fully (typically 24-48 hrs) before pointing
