Quoin
/koyn/
Also known as: quoin stones, corner stones, angle quoins, dressed quoins, rusticated quoins
Definition
The external corner stones or bricks of a building, often larger, more regularly cut, or made from a contrasting material to the surrounding walling. Quoins provide both structural strength at corners and a decorative feature, common in Georgian and Victorian architecture.
In Practice
In traditional construction, quoin stones were carefully dressed and bonded alternately into both wall faces for strength. In modern construction, decorative quoins are often applied as a facing detail rather than a structural element. Planning authorities in conservation areas may require quoins to match the original material and profile exactly.
