Around 40 conservation areas include Battersea, Clapham, Putney, Tooting and Wandsworth town centre. The Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea Opportunity Area (straddling Lambeth and Wandsworth) is one of London's largest regeneration zones, anchored by Battersea Power Station. You may use either the council's own building control service or a private Approved Inspector. For listed buildings, building control must be coordinated with Listed Building Consent requirements.

Battersea Power Station (Grade II*, now redeveloped) is the most iconic building in the borough. Putney has the Church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade I, partly 15th century). The Paragon (Grade II* Regency terrace, Blackheath side) and the Victorian mansion blocks of Nightingale Lane are notable. Around 40 conservation areas protect a wide range of Victorian and Edwardian residential environments. The Thames riverside has significant maritime and industrial heritage. Listed Building Consent is required in addition to planning permission for any works to a listed building that would affect its special architectural or historic interest, including internal works.

Thames tidal flood risk is significant for the Battersea and Wandsworth riverside areas. Parts of the Vauxhall Nine Elms zone and the Wandsworth riverside lie within Flood Zone 3. The River Wandle entering the Thames at Wandsworth creates additional local flood risk. A Flood Risk Assessment is required for development in flood risk zones.
