Over 35 conservation areas include Kensal Green, Willesden Green and Brondesbury Park. The Welsh Harp (Brent Reservoir, SSSI) is a significant ecological constraint in the north-east. Kensal Green Cemetery (Grade I registered park) is an important heritage asset. Wembley Stadium and the surrounding opportunity area is one of London's largest regeneration zones. South Kilburn is also subject to a major estate regeneration programme. The Grand Union Canal passes through the borough.

Building regulations approval is required for most structural work, extensions, loft conversions, new windows and heating system changes. You may use either the council's own building control service or a private Approved Inspector. For listed buildings, building control must be coordinated with Listed Building Consent requirements.

Kensal Green Cemetery is Grade I registered - the earliest of London's great Victorian garden cemeteries and the resting place of many notable figures. The borough has over 35 conservation areas and a significant number of listed buildings, particularly in the Kensal Rise, Willesden and Queen's Park areas. The Grand Union Canal's historic infrastructure (locks, warehouses, bridges) is also a significant heritage asset. Listed Building Consent is required in addition to planning permission for any works to a listed building that would affect its special architectural or historic interest, including internal works.

Flood risk in Brent is primarily associated with the River Brent and Wealdstone Brook corridors, and the Welsh Harp reservoir spillway. Properties near watercourses in Wembley, Stonebridge and Alperton should be checked carefully. The borough is Lead Local Flood Authority for surface water flooding.
