The East Riding contains the Yorkshire Wolds AONB and extensive low-lying areas at risk of coastal erosion and tidal flooding. The Holderness coast has the fastest eroding coastline in Europe - development in or near the coastal zone requires careful assessment. The Humber Estuary and its banks are subject to tidal flood risk and the Humber Flood Risk Management Strategy applies.

Hull is one of the UK cities most at risk from tidal and surface water flooding - much of the city is at or below sea level. A Flood Risk Assessment is required for virtually all development in the city. Hull's historic Old Town is a designated Conservation Area with a high density of listed buildings. The Fruit Market and Humber Quays regeneration areas have active development briefs.

Both East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Kingston upon Hull City Council operate building control teams. You may also use a Registered Building Control Approver anywhere in East Yorkshire.

East Yorkshire's heritage includes Beverley Minster (one of England's finest Gothic churches), Hull's medieval Old Town, Burton Agnes Hall, and the distinctive Wolds landscape with its dry valleys and Iron Age square-barrow cemeteries. Hull's Blitz damage means many central buildings are of 1950s-70s construction and increasingly subject to demolition or change of use considerations.

Essential for heritage impact assessments and archaeological evaluations. Waterlogged and below-ground preservation conditions in the area mean that archaeological remains are frequently encountered during groundworks - particularly in Hull's city centre and the low-lying vale areas.

Flood Incident Line: 0345 988 1188 (24hr). East Yorkshire has acute flood risk from multiple sources. Hull is particularly vulnerable to surface water flooding (much of the city drains slowly) and tidal flooding from the Humber. The 2007 floods caused approximately £200m of damage in Hull. Coastal erosion on the Holderness coast is removing approximately 2 metres per year in places - new development near the coast requires careful assessment. The Humber Flood Risk Management Strategy and catchment flood management plans apply across the area. A Flood Risk Assessment is required for most development in Hull and in low-lying parts of the East Riding.

Build-over agreements required within 3 metres of a public sewer. In Hull, private drain connections to public sewers and the combined sewer overflow (CSO) network are critical flood-risk considerations for development.

Power cuts: 105. Northern Powergrid operates the electricity distribution network across East Yorkshire including Hull.

Gas emergency: 0800 111 999. Use LSBUD or Dial Before You Dig to check pipe locations before excavating. The Humber area has significant existing and planned hydrogen and carbon capture infrastructure - be aware of pipeline safeguarding zones.

The Humber Bridge (01482 647 161) is operated by the Humber Bridge Board and is a separate authority for matters affecting the bridge and its approaches.

Notify HSE of notifiable construction projects under CDM Regulations at least 2 weeks before work begins.
