A heritage structural engineer is a chartered structural or civil engineer who has developed specialist knowledge of how traditional buildings behave structurally. Historic masonry, timber frames, vaulted ceilings and rubble-filled walls do not behave like modern reinforced concrete or steel frames - they work primarily in compression, are flexible in response to seasonal movement, and have often reached equilibrium states over centuries. Over-engineering a repair in such a building - by stiffening what is designed to be flexible, or by waterproofing what is designed to breathe - can do more damage than the original problem. A heritage structural engineer understands this distinction and designs the minimum necessary intervention.
