A pool installer designs, constructs and fits swimming pools, hot tubs and swim spas for residential and commercial properties. Pool construction requires specialist knowledge of excavation, waterproofing, hydraulics, filtration, heating and electrical systems. The trade is not statutorily regulated but the SPATA (Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association) is the main industry body. PWTAG publishes guidance on pool water treatment and hygiene standards, particularly relevant for commercial and semi-public pools. A reputable pool contractor should be familiar with PWTAG guidance and able to design pool plant to meet the relevant standards.
Pool electrical work must be carried out by a Part P registered electrician with experience of the special locations requirements of BS 7671. The pool contractor should either employ a qualified electrician or subcontract electrical work to one and provide a minor works or electrical installation certificate.

Do I need planning permission for a swimming pool?
Most outdoor swimming pools in England and Wales are permitted development and do not require planning permission, provided they are not in the curtilage of a listed building or in a designated area such as an AONB or conservation area. Indoor pools within an existing house may trigger a need for Building Regulations approval. Always check with your local planning authority and Building Control before starting work.
What is the cheapest type of pool to install?
Modular fibreglass shells are typically the most cost-effective way to install a permanent swimming pool - they arrive as a complete moulded shell and are lowered into a prepared excavation. Above-ground and semi-inground steel or resin frame pools are even cheaper but have a shorter lifespan. Concrete pools are the most expensive but can be any shape and size and are the most durable long-term solution.
How long does pool installation take?
A fibreglass pool typically takes 2-4 weeks to install once the groundworks are complete and the shell is ready to drop in. A concrete pool takes significantly longer - typically 3-6 months from excavation to handover as the concrete shell needs to cure before waterproofing, tiling and fitting out. An indoor pool with structural changes to a building will take longer still.
