An oak frame carpenter is a specialist who designs, crafts and erects structural frames using green oak or air-dried hardwood, employing traditional joinery techniques such as mortice and tenon joints secured with hardwood pegs. Oak frame carpentry has experienced a revival in the UK for extensions, garden rooms, car ports, agricultural buildings and self-build homes. The frames can be infilled with modern structural insulated panels (SIPs) or traditional wattle and daub, combining centuries-old craft with contemporary performance requirements.
What they do
- Design and craft green oak frames using traditional pegged joinery
- Erect oak frame structures on site, often in a single day
- Supply and fit SIPs panels to infill structural frames
- Install exposed oak internal beams and trusses
- Create oak staircases, balustrades and decorative features
- Repair and restore original historic oak frames
- Design oak frame agricultural buildings and barns
- Advise on oak finishing, maintenance and weathering

What is green oak?
Freshly felled oak that has not been kiln-dried. It contains significant moisture and continues to dry (season) after erection, causing it to split and crack in a characteristic pattern. This is entirely normal and does not affect structural integrity. Green oak is easier to work than seasoned oak and is the traditional material for large structural frames.
Does green oak need treatment?
Green oak does not require preservative treatment as it is naturally durable due to its high tannin content. It can be left unfinished to silver-grey naturally over time or treated with a penetrating oil to maintain the golden honey colour. It should not be painted or finished with products that seal the surface and prevent natural seasoning.
How long does oak framing last?
Oak frames in existing historic buildings have lasted 400-600 years. Properly detailed oak framing - with good overhangs to keep moisture away from joints, appropriate lime-based infill panels and good ventilation - is one of the most durable building systems available. The key to longevity is keeping the base of the frame dry and allowing the timber to breathe.
