A mechanical building services engineer designs the systems that heat, cool and ventilate a building, and supply hot and cold water. On commercial and larger residential schemes they work alongside an electrical engineer as part of an M&E team, producing a coordinated services design that satisfies Part L and Part F of the Building Regulations, meets the client's comfort requirements, and can be commissioned and maintained efficiently. On smaller projects the same firm may provide both mechanical and electrical design.

Do I need a mechanical engineer for a home extension?

Usually not. A competent heating engineer or plumber can handle the mechanical services for most domestic extensions. A mechanical building services engineer is typically needed for commercial projects, larger residential developments, or schemes with complex HVAC requirements such as air conditioning, district heating connections, or MVHR systems serving multiple units.

What is CIBSE?

CIBSE stands for the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers - the professional body for mechanical and electrical building services engineers in the UK. MCIBSE (Member) and FCIBSE (Fellow) after a name confirm that the engineer has met CIBSE's competence standards in areas such as HVAC design, energy modelling and building physics.

What does M&E stand for?

M&E stands for Mechanical and Electrical - the two main branches of building services engineering. Mechanical covers heating, cooling, ventilation and plumbing; electrical covers power distribution, lighting, fire alarm and data cabling. On commercial projects a single M&E consultant often covers both disciplines with separate lead engineers for each.
