A flood risk engineer typically prepares Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs) for planning purposes using standard hydraulic modelling techniques. A hydrologist focuses on the broader water cycle - catchment behaviour, rainfall-runoff relationships, groundwater interaction, long-term trends and statistical analysis of river flows. For straightforward FRAs a flood risk engineer suffices; for complex catchment studies, water resource assessments or where groundwater dominates, a hydrologist with advanced modelling skills is needed.

When do I need a hydrologist rather than a standard flood risk assessment?
