An EV chargepoint installer is a Part P registered electrician with additional OZEV (Office for Zero Emission Vehicles) approval who installs electric vehicle charging equipment at homes, workplaces and public locations. OZEV approval is mandatory to claim the Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant on behalf of customers. The work involves new electrical circuits, consumer unit connections and often external cabling, all of which must comply with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) and Building Regulations Part P.

  • Assess the existing electrical supply and consumer unit capacity
  • Install a dedicated 7kW (32A) or 22kW (three-phase) home chargepoint
  • Run cable from the consumer unit to the chargepoint location
  • Upgrade consumer unit or main fuse where capacity is insufficient
  • Commission smart chargepoint and configure app and off-peak scheduling
  • Claim the OZEV Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant on the customer's behalf

An EV chargepoint installation is a new electrical circuit - it must be carried out by a qualified and registered electrician, and OZEV approval is required for grant eligibility.

After the OZEV grant, a typical home 7kW smart charger costs £150-£550 net. More expensive units include load balancing, solar divert functionality and integrated tethered cable. Always confirm the installer will provide an Electrical Installation Certificate.

NICEIC or NAPIT Part P Registration

Required for all domestic electrical work. Confirms the installer can self-certify new circuits without a separate Building Control notification.

What is the OZEV EV chargepoint grant?

The Electric Vehicle Chargepoint Grant provides £350 off the cost of installing a home EV charger for eligible homeowners and tenants. The installer must be OZEV approved and must claim the grant on your behalf - you pay the net price. The grant does not apply to workplace chargepoints (those have a separate Workplace Charging Scheme). Check current eligibility at ozev.gov.uk.

What speed charger do I need at home?

A 7kW single-phase charger is standard for most homes and adds approximately 30 miles of range per hour of charging. A 22kW three-phase charger adds approximately 80 miles per hour but requires a three-phase electricity supply, which most UK homes do not have. For most domestic users a 7kW smart charger with off-peak scheduling is the optimal solution.

Can I charge an EV from a standard socket?

Yes, via a Mode 2 cable (sometimes called a granny charger) which plugs into a standard 13A socket and charges at about 2.3kW - adding roughly 8 miles per hour. This is fine for occasional top-ups but slow for daily use. A dedicated 7kW home chargepoint is strongly recommended for regular home charging and is significantly faster and safer for long-term use.
