An earthworks engineer designs and specifies all cut, fill, slope and compaction operations on a development site. Where ground levels vary significantly across a site, or where development platforms must be raised or lowered, an earthworks engineer optimises the cut-and-fill balance to minimise the cost of importing or exporting material. They work from a digital ground model produced from topographic survey data to calculate volumes, specify slopes and embankments, and produce earthworks drawings and specifications for the main contractor. On contaminated sites they work alongside a contaminated land specialist to classify and manage spoil appropriately.

CEng MICE - Chartered Civil Engineer with earthworks or geotechnical specialism

What is cut-and-fill?

Cut-and-fill is a technique for balancing earthworks on a development site - material cut from high areas is used to fill low areas, minimising both the excavation of new material and the disposal of surplus spoil. A cut-and-fill analysis using a digital ground model optimises the earthworks balance and can significantly reduce construction costs by avoiding import or export of material.

What compaction specification is needed for development sites?

The compaction specification depends on the end use of the fill. Structural fill beneath foundations or roads requires a tighter specification than landscaping fill - the earthworks engineer specifies compaction energy, layer thickness and material classification using either the end-product specification (testing for density) or method specification (prescribing plant and layer thickness). The relevant standard is the Specification for Highway Works (Series 600) for road subgrade.

How is contaminated spoil managed on development sites?

Contaminated material must be classified under the Waste Regulations and either treated on site, disposed of to a licensed waste facility, or reused on the same site under a Material Management Plan (MMP). An earthworks engineer working with a contaminated land specialist can develop an appropriate strategy - reuse on site under an MMP can avoid significant disposal costs where conditions are met.
