A bridge engineer is a chartered engineer specialising in the design, inspection and assessment of bridges and other structural highway assets. In a development context they are required whenever a planning scheme or highway improvement involves a new bridge, footbridge, culvert or underpass - or when an existing bridge must be assessed to determine whether it can carry the additional loads generated by development traffic. Bridge engineers work to the Eurocodes for new structures and the National Highways assessment standards for existing highway bridges. Their designs require independent checking and highway authority technical approval before construction.

CEng MICE - Chartered Civil Engineer (Institution of Civil Engineers)

Some bridge engineers hold MIStructE, particularly those working on more architecturally complex or pedestrian bridge projects. Both IStructE and ICE are accepted by highway authorities. Verify at istructe.org.

What is a principal bridge inspection?

A principal bridge inspection is a detailed inspection carried out every 6 years (or 2 years for at-risk structures) that examines all accessible parts of a bridge in detail, including underwater elements where applicable, to identify deterioration, defects and maintenance requirements. It is carried out by a suitably qualified bridge engineer and results in a condition report with recommended maintenance actions.

What standards apply to UK bridge design?

The UK uses the Eurocodes (BS EN 1990 to 1999) for new bridge design, supplemented by national annexes published by BSI. Historic bridges may be assessed to BD 21/01 (loads) or BD 44/15 (assessment) published under the National Highways standards. Footbridges are often designed to BS EN 1337 bearing standards and BS EN 1337 structural fire design requirements depending on their location and use.

When does a culvert need engineering design?

Any culvert designed to carry vehicle loads, carry significant flow volumes or cross a main river (as defined by the Environment Agency) should be designed by a qualified engineer. Pre-designed proprietary culverts are available for standard situations but require engineering input for larger flows, abnormal vehicle loadings or where the culvert spans more than 0.9 metres and falls within the scope of the Flood Risk Regulations.
