Unvented Cylinder
/ ʌnˈvɛntɪd ˈsɪlɪndə /
Also known as: mains pressure hot water cylinder, Megaflo, pressurised cylinder, G3 cylinder
Definition
An unvented cylinder is a sealed hot water storage vessel connected directly to the mains cold water supply, operating at mains pressure and eliminating the need for a cold water cistern in the loft. It delivers hot water at mains flow rate (far better pressure than vented gravity systems). Must have mandatory safety devices: pressure reducing valve on cold supply, pressure relief valve, expansion vessel, and temperature relief valve (TPR). Notifiable work under Building Regulations Part G3 - must be installed by a G3-registered competent person. Annual servicing (checking safety valves and expansion vessel pre-charge) is essential.
In practice
The most common maintenance issue with unvented cylinders is a failed expansion vessel - the air pre-charge in the vessel bladder is lost over time, leaving the vessel full of water and unable to absorb expansion. This causes the pressure relief valve to open regularly and discharge water (often visible as a dripping overflow pipe at the side or rear of the building). Re-charging the expansion vessel (or replacing it if the bladder has failed) is a straightforward annual service item. The PRV and TPR valves should also be exercised annually to confirm they move freely and do not stick - a stuck safety valve on an unvented cylinder is a serious safety risk.
Legionella prevention is a specific concern with unvented cylinders used with heat pumps. Approved Document G requires the stored hot water to reach 60 degrees C at least once a week to pasteurise the water and prevent Legionella growth. Most heat pump controllers include an automatic weekly legionella cycle using the immersion heater to reach 60 degrees C if the heat pump alone cannot achieve this temperature. In a combination boiler installation (no stored hot water), Legionella risk is not an issue as water is heated instantaneously.
Building Regulations
Building Regulations Part G3 (Unvented Hot Water Storage Systems) requires that any unvented hot water cylinder with a capacity over 15 litres or a power input over 3kW is installed and commissioned by a person registered under an approved competent person scheme for G3 work. The installation must incorporate all required safety devices installed in the correct sequence and configuration, with the temperature and pressure relief valve discharge pipe installed to BS 6700 requirements (visible, safe tundish location, correctly sized discharge pipe to a safe outside location). A completion certificate must be issued by the installer and given to the property owner. Failure to comply is a criminal offence under the Building Act 1984.
