LVL

/ ɛl viː ɛl /

Also known as: laminated veneer lumber, Kerto, Hyspan, Wesbeam

LVL (laminated veneer lumber) is an engineered structural timber product manufactured by bonding multiple thin wood veneers (3-4mm) with structural adhesive, all grain directions running parallel. The rotary-peeled veneer construction distributes natural defects evenly, resulting in highly consistent structural properties that are typically stronger and stiffer than equivalent glulam sections. Available in widths 33-90mm, depths 150-600mm, and factory lengths to 24m; multiple sections bolted together create composite beams of greater width. Used for beams, lintels, rim boards, I-joist flanges, and scaffold planks. Surface is smooth and uniform (showing veneer layer lines), suitable for structural but not architectural exposed use. Lower moisture content than glulam; very dimensionally stable. Major brands: Kerto (Metsawood), Hyspan, Wesbeam.

LVL has become the dominant beam and lintel material in engineered timber floor systems. In a typical modern open-plan ground-floor extension using an I-joist floor system, the perimeter rim board (the outer edge of the floor at the wall head) will be LVL, and any point load-carrying header beams within the floor zone will be LVL rather than solid timber. The narrow single-section width (45-63mm) means it can be handled on site by two people and passed through standard openings without requiring a crane, unlike large glulam beams.

When specifying LVL for a residential lintel, the structural engineer will calculate the required section size (typically expressed as width x depth, e.g. 2/45x200mm LVL meaning two 45mm wide sections bolted together at 200mm depth). The LVL must be ordered cut to length - unlike glulam, it is not typically available at builders' merchants and must be sourced from a timber frame specialist or engineered timber supplier with a reasonable lead time (1-2 weeks typically). Cutting LVL on site with a normal circular saw is fine; the veneers cut cleanly. Standard joist hanger proprietary products from the major timber connector manufacturers (Simpson Strong-Tie, MiTek) have specific hanger ranges designed for LVL sections.
