Bearing

/BEAR-ing/

Also known as: bearing length, end bearing, lintel bearing, padstone bearing

The length of a beam, lintel, or joist that sits on and is supported by its supporting structure, such as a wall or column. Adequate bearing is critical to transfer loads safely without localised crushing of the supporting masonry.

Building Regulations set minimum bearing lengths for lintels: typically 150mm each end on masonry walls up to 3.5m span, increasing for longer spans. Inadequate bearing is a common cause of lintel failure and cracked masonry above openings. A padstone or spreader plate may be required where point loads are concentrated.

Minimum bearing lengths are specified in BS 8103 for domestic construction and BS EN 845-2 for lintels. Structural engineers may specify longer bearings for heavier loads.
